Problem: How do we cover up the ugly concrete slab steps and match the style of a 130-year-old house. Solution: Cover the steps with reclaimed lumber and mosaic the raisers to add some interest and color.
The wood covering was refinished with many protective coats of varnish. Thin strips of sand embedded in the varnish provided a non-slip surface for winter. The raisers were painstakingly reconstructed from broken pieces of Mexican tile.
